CESP Awards More Than $55,000 in Scholarships to DCHA Students

More than $55,000 in scholarships were awarded to 19 students furthering their education as part of the District of Columbia Housing Authority’s Commitment to Excellence Scholarship Program.

The CESP awards, which were given out at a ceremony on August 4, provide financial assistance to DCHA customers who demonstrate a financial need and academic leadership. Applicants have to be full-time students in college or an accredited training program beyond high school.

“We want to make you feel supported as you continue on your educational journeys,” said DCHA Director of Resident Services Brian K. Harris. “We will continue to support you on your way.”

The agency partnered with ThinkBox Group, LLC, who received a Solar for All grant from the District Department of Energy and the Environment to award $25,000 to students majoring in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) studies and create a $5,000 fund for the students to use towards equipment and supplies.

“The partnership between DCHA and DOEE through the Solar for All grant is changing lives and impacting communities,” said R. Denise Everson, LEED AP, Assoc. AIA, ThinkBox. “We look forward to continuing our joint program and projects benefiting DCHA residents and the greater community.”

In addition to the CESP and STEAM scholarships, one student, Sabrina Bouaichi received DCHA’s character scholarship, the Iris McLaurin-Southall Award. Bouaichi will be attending the University of Pittsburgh as a freshman this fall.

“Your time matters. Remember you have a purpose. It is your purpose that will drive you,” said DCHA’s Senior Vice President of Property Management Operations Larry Williams, a keynote speaker at the CESP Awards Ceremony. “Remember that someone is looking up to you like you looked up to someone else.”
