More than 70 District of Columbia Housing Authority Resident Council officers were sworn-in by Board of Commissioners Chairman Neil Albert this week.
The elections, which were held on September 9 and 10, allow residents to choose leadership in their individual communities. Resident councils represent their neighbors and work to improve the quality of life for residents living in traditional public housing. DCHA Executive Director Brenda Donald will soon meet with the presidents of each resident council to share plans for renovations to properties, security, and other issues.
“This is a new beginning. I’m looking forward to working with our resident leaders, old and new. I want to hear first-hand from councils at regular leadership meetings what they are working on, be able to share what I’m working on, get feedback, and engage in joint problem solving and strategic planning,” Donald said.
The elections were conducted by a third party consultant, Resident Participation Services PLLC, to ensure elections were fair, transparent, and accessible. The consultant, as well as DCHA, worked to include safety precautions as important criteria in the election process.
Residents safely attended informational sessions about the elections. Interested candidates participated in candidate training and candidate forums in August to learn how to run for office and best present their views.
“The leaders are very excited about meeting and greeting the new executive director, as well as hearing from other departments within the agency,” said DCHA’s Client Relations and Customer Service Manager Fashad W. Tyler.
