Children in the District of Columbia Housing Authority’s Southwest communities received some holiday cheer in the form of gifts and music–kicking off the agency’s Gift of Love celebration.
U.S. Coast Guard Chaplin Lt. Jonathan Alexander and his staff distributed the gifts, which were collected from Coast Guard and other Department of Homeland Security employees, to families at the Southwest Family Enhancement and Career Center on December 18 as carols played in the background. Friends and neighbors enjoyed the tunes while sharing a meal. Throughout the event, gift cards and bikes, which were donated by Deloitte, were raffled off to those in attendance.
Each year since 2003, the District of Columbia Housing Authority has helped thousands of children enjoy the holidays. The Gift of Love initiative offers DCHA employees, community partners, government agencies, and others the opportunity to provide toys, books, and other gifts to brighten the holiday season for children. Combined with the efforts from other federal and local organizations, such as the U.S. Coast Guard, DCHA will be able to serve a total of 5,000 children throughout the community at other local events, including a coat distribution.
