More than 600 job-seeking D.C. residents attended a recent hiring information event for The Wharf’s next phase of construction.
The job fair, held January 24 at the District of Columbia Housing Authority’s Southwest Family Enhancement and Career Center, was a chance for DCHA customers and other area residents to learn more about potential open positions directly from the contractors that will be working at the site.
The three prime contractors, about a dozen sub-contractors, pre-apprenticeship training partner Building Futures, and D.C.’s returning citizens agency were all in attendance. Additionally, the D.C. Department of Employment Services Workforce Opportunity Van was there with staff helping people with resumes and registration on the D.C. jobs data bank.
As job openings become available as work on the second phase of The Wharf begins, the contractors who were at the event will contact the qualified attendees they met at the Southwest Family Enhancement and Career Center, also known as the EnVision Center.
Those attendees that need additional training to be ready for the job market were able to connect with the construction pre-apprenticeship training organization, Building Futures, and register their interest in upcoming classes. All attendees were encouraged to sign up at the Workforce on Wheels van to register on D.C. Networks where all jobs in construction projects requiring First Source are listed. There also was opportunity to learn more about and register for DCHA’s Workforce Development trainings and courses.
